Creating the Perfect Wedding Day Experience at San Francisco City Hall

Getting married at San Francisco City Hall is a timeless choice—and for many couples, the perfect blend of romance, history, and simplicity. With its iconic Beaux-Arts architecture, soaring dome, grand staircases, and natural light flooding every level, City Hall offers a wedding experience that feels both intimate and cinematic.

Beyond its beauty, City Hall is incredibly versatile and cost-effective, making it accessible for couples planning anything from a quiet elopement to a larger, design-forward celebration. With multiple ceremony locations, flexible guest counts, and several reservation options, it’s easy to tailor the experience to match your vision while still feeling elevated and intentional.

San Francisco City Hall Wedding Ceremony Options

When booking your ceremony at City Hall, there are three primary options, each offering a distinct experience depending on guest count, privacy, and overall feel.

1. Civil Ceremony (Rotunda Ceremony)

Investment: Approximately $100
Guest Count: Up to 6 guests
Duration: 3–4 minutes
Location: Rotunda
Booking Window: Must be reserved at least 4 weeks in advance

A civil ceremony is perfect for couples seeking a simple, elegant, and meaningful moment without the formality of a full event. These ceremonies take place in the Rotunda and are officiated by a City Hall–provided minister. While brief, the grandeur of the space ensures the moment still feels special and ceremonial.

Why couples love it:

  • Ideal for elopements and intimate vows
  • Minimal planning required
  • A beautiful option for couples prioritizing simplicity and emotion

2. One-Hour Private Ceremony

Investment: $1,200
Guest Count: Up to 100 guests
Duration: 1 hour
Locations: Mayor’s Balcony or Fourth Floor

This is the most popular option for couples who want a private, curated experience while still enjoying the public charm of City Hall. You’ll have exclusive access to your chosen location for one full hour, allowing time for a personalized ceremony, guest interactions, and portraits.

Chairs are included for up to 40 guests (additional rentals are required beyond that).

Pro Tip:
The Fourth Floor is typically the best option for larger guest counts and offers the most flattering, consistent natural light—especially important for photography. It also allows for a more spacious layout and smoother guest flow.

Why couples love it:

  • Feels intentional and private without a full buyout
  • Time for ceremony + portraits without feeling rushed
  • Ideal for design-conscious couples

3. Full City Hall Buyout

Investment: $6,000
Availability: Saturdays only
Guest Count: Up to 200 guests
Duration: 2-hour exclusive rental

For couples dreaming of a truly grand experience, a full buyout allows complete privacy with no public access to the building during your rental window. This option is ideal for larger guest lists, fashion-forward celebrations, or couples planning a more elaborate timeline with multiple moments throughout City Hall.

Why couples love it:

  • Total privacy and creative freedom
  • Ideal for editorial-style weddings
  • Seamless flow for larger celebrations

Designing a Seamless City Hall Wedding Experience

No matter which ceremony option you choose, the key to creating the perfect San Francisco City Hall wedding day is intentional planning. Thoughtful timelines, guest flow, and photography coverage can elevate the experience from simple to unforgettable.

Consider:

  • Scheduling your ceremony earlier in the day for softer light and fewer crowds
  • Allowing time for portraits on the staircase, fourth floor, and exterior
  • Planning a post-ceremony celebration nearby for a seamless transition

City Hall is more than just a venue—it’s a canvas. With the right approach, it becomes a refined, emotional, and deeply personal setting for one of the most meaningful days of your life.
